What Romania names its streets

The first nine places belong to the main road, church, school, flowers, mills, vineyards and seasons. The first person, Mihai Eminescu, appears only at number 10.

01 · The measurement

One name, three honest counts

A road is often split into many digital segments. The primary ranking therefore counts distinct local administrative units, while preserving segments and mapped length as secondary measures.

Local-unit presence

The national ranking: one canonical name counts once in each local administrative unit.

OSM segments

Useful for diagnosing how a road is mapped, but never mistaken for a number of streets.

Mapped length

A second view of prominence: kilometres are informative, not a proxy for remembrance.

03 · Method

What the instrument knows

Observations, transformations and editorial interpretation remain separate. The limits of inference are explicit.

Current layer

Named highway ways from the OpenStreetMap extract are retained only when their midpoint falls inside Romania, then assigned to a UAT-equivalent area. Bucharest is included once through its county-equivalent municipality boundary.

Normalisation

Romanian diacritics, generic street-type prefixes, spacing and punctuation are normalised. Person aliases and genitives are merged only through a reviewed table.

Historical layer

The 2016 Ministry of Finance county nomenclatures can be imported as a separate longitudinal layer, including historical names where supplied.

The 1989 trap

A current name associated with socialist vocabulary is not proof that the street kept that name continuously from before 1989. The label describes repertoire, confidence and local verification needs.

Biographies

Only manually reviewed person matches receive biographies. Uncertain names remain unidentified rather than being attached automatically to a plausible Wikidata entity.

Coverage

OpenStreetMap is a living volunteer database. Absence can mean that a street is unnamed, unmapped or mapped without a name; local-authority assignment can also fail near boundaries.
